    About Onion Tomato Thokku

Onion Tomato Thokku is a classic South Indian masala made by slowly cooking onions and ripe tomatoes with spices until they turn thick and delicious. Unlike regular chutney, Onion Tomato Thokku has a thicker texture and a longer shelf life as the ingredients are cooked until most of the moisture evaporates.

I first tasted Onion Tomato Thokku in my office when my colleague brought it for lunch. I liked it so much that I asked her for the recipe and tried it for dinner that day. It is quick, easy to make and tastes great too. Since then it has become my staple dish when I want a quick side dish.

It’s made using simple pantry staples and requires minimal preparation yet tastes insanely delicious. The trick here is to chop the onion and tomato finely so that it cooks quickly and gives a thick thokku consistency. Whether served with breakfast, as a lunchbox companion, or as a mix with instant rice, this traditional recipe brings out the authentic South Indian flavour.

If you love simple homemade masala packed with flavour, this Onion Tomato Thokku will definitely become a favourite. I am sure your family will demand to make it often as it does with mine.

    Expert Tips

    • Onion – Chop the onion finely and evenly.
    • Tomato – Choose fully ripe, juicy tomatoes for best flavor and natural sweetness. Ripe tomatoes also give a rich color to the thokku and help in creating the right balance of spiciness.
    • Oil – Do not compromise with oil, there should be a little more oil for this thokku.
    • spice powder – Masala powder should not burn, hence after frying for a minute, immediately add water, this is done to prevent burning. If you like masala flavor more then add garam masala powder and fennel while adding tadka.
    • cook until thickened – A good thokku should be thick and spreadable, not watery. Continue cooking on low medium flame until excess moisture evaporates and the mixture becomes thick.

    serving and storing

Serve Onion Tomato Thokku with chapatti, idli, dosa etc. This thokku remains good for about a week in the refrigerator. Allow the thokku to cool completely before transferring it to a clean, dry airtight container. Always use dry spoon to maintain freshness and extend shelf life.
