Bread omelette is basically toasted bread covered with a simple spiced egg mixture, and its flavors come together well when it is toasted until golden on both sides. This dish has soft eggs and slightly crunchy bread, so the texture is satisfying in itself. The spices are mild making it an ideal breakfast recipe. Bread and eggs are a winning combo and this is no exception.

Bread Omelette is one of those easy breakfast recipes that I make when I feel like something filling but don’t really have much time to think about what to cook. I mostly make this for quick breakfast or sometimes even for evening snack especially when one wants something hot and tasty immediately.

    About Bread Omelette

Bread omelette is one of the oldest street-style snacks that you will find in many places, and each shop has its own variations. The basic idea is simple where eggs are beaten with onions, green chillies and spices, bread slices are dipped in it and cooked together. The bread absorbs the egg mixture and you get soft toast on the inside and light outside.

Bread omelette always reminds me of train journeys as I love bread omelette served in Indian Railways and I must admit that I look forward to day train journeys for this dish. I make this when I feel hungry in between meals or when we need a quick snack. This always proves to be quite satisfying.

The taste also depends on how you like your omelette. Some people add more onions to make it a little crunchy, some keep it plain with just the spices. The heat of the black pepper and chilli gives a nice zest and the coriander leaves add that refreshing touch.

People make it in many ways. You can toast the bread first and then sandwich the omelette, add some cheese on top, or even add small pieces of capsicum or tomato to the eggs. You can also make a larger bread by adding a few bread slices, like the ones in stores. Each version has its own good taste.

    Bread Omelette Ingredients

    • pieces of bread – I have used white bread, you can also use wheat bread or milk bread, both work in almost the same way.
    • eggs – I added two eggs because this gives enough mixture to cover the bread properly and keep the omelette soft and fluffy. If you feel that it is getting a little thin, you can add another egg to it.
    • chilli powder – I’m using it to add a little spicy flavor and a little color. You can adjust it to how much heat you want.
    • garam masala – I added a pinch mainly for flavor, it mixes well with the onion and eggs. If you like very simple taste then you can leave it also.
    • turmeric powder – I used just a small pinch, it gives a warmer color and mild earthy flavor, and also makes the omelette look brighter.
    • freshly ground black pepper – I added it for heat which is very suitable for egg dishes. If you like the taste of black pepper more, you can add a little extra to it.
    • Onion – I used finely chopped onion as it gives a slight crispness and mild sweetness once cooked.
    • Green chilly – I added a green chili for extra heat. If you are making for children or if you don’t want too much spice then you can leave it out.
    • coriander leaves – For fresh smell and taste I have used some chopped coriander. This makes the omelette seem lighter.
    • Oil – I used to make omelettes and also toast bread. You can also use ghee if you want a richer taste.

    Expert Tips

    • beat well – First of all, beat the eggs for a few seconds so that they become light and mix evenly with the onion and spices.
    • cook on medium flame – I have found that cooking on medium flame cooks the omelette properly without burning the edges of the bread.
    • turn slowly -Turn the omelette slowly as the egg mixture will be soft at first and may burst if cooked rapidly.
    • add extra black pepper – I have sometimes tried adding a little more black pepper, and it gives a strong nice flavor that goes well with the bread omelette.
    • cheese substitute – I sometimes put a small piece of cheese on top, and it melts inside making the whole omelette more filling and delicious.

    serving and storage

If you wish, serve it hot with chopped onions, coriander leaves or a little ketchup. It tastes good with tea or even as a quick meal. This recipe tastes best when served immediately. I do not recommend storing leftovers.
