Christmas cookies are simple vanilla flavored cookies sprinkled with colored sugar. These are original cut-out cookies that look very festive and nice. These are usually made during Christmas time only, but you can bake them anytime you feel like baking at home.

You can make these cookies just during the holidays or when kids are around. The taste in this recipe is mild and slightly sweet, it is not heavy at all. The vanilla flavor is only mild and not very intense. Also the sprinkles add a little crunch and color which makes it more fun to eat.

    About Christmas Cookies

Christmas cookies are basic sugar cookies made using flour, butter, sugar and vanilla extract. The dough is rolled out and cut using different shaped cutters, making baking a little more interesting. These cookies are very common during the festive season as they are easy to make and easy to decorate.

The texture of these cookies becomes crispy when cooled. When they come out of the oven they may look soft but once they cool they become crunchy. The edges turn light golden while the center remains yellow, this is how sugar cookies should generally look.

Its taste is mildly sweet with a clean vanilla flavor. There are no strong spices added to this recipe, these cookies go well with toppings like royal icing, sugar sprinkles or even melted chocolate. If you want a little variation, you can also add a little citrus zest or almond essence to the flour.

I usually make these cookies in December when it’s time to bake slowly. Rolling out and cutting out shapes takes time, but I enjoy doing it. I keep some cookies plain and decorate the rest, so everyone gets what they like.

There are many variations of sugar cookies like the one I posted here with the royal icingSugar cookies can be made by shaping them by hand or cutting them out with a cookie cutter as I have made here, I used the Christmas Cookie Cutter Set for these cookies, I always love cutout sugar cookies, this time I tried sprinkling sugar on top and they looked so pretty, no wonder Mittu loved it,

    Christmas Cookies Ingredients

    • Flour – I have used it as a main base for cookies, it helps keep the shape well. I sometimes add a little wheat flour but the texture may change.
    • butter – It gives richness and crunchy texture to the cookies. I used cold butter, if you are whipping by hand you can use room temperature.
    • Castor sugar – I used powdered sugar because it mixes easily with the butter.
    • Egg – I just added an egg to bind and give structure to the dough. You can try the eggless version but handling the dough will be a little different.
    • vanilla extract – I added it for flavor and classic cookie taste. You can use any light essence if you wish.
    • baking powder – I added it for lift and it gives a light texture. Use fresh baking powder.
    • sprinkle colored sugar – I have used it for topping, it adds crunch and festive look. You can leave it out or replace it with icing.

    Expert Tips

    • chill the dough – I keep the dough in the refrigerator now, otherwise it will become so sticky that it will be difficult to handle. I never skip this step.
    • don’t overcook – You do not have to bake for too long, the cookies will become hard after cooling. Take them out when they become light golden.
    • space on tray – These cookies expand while baking, so leave enough space between them. I usually keep a good gap.
    • rolling – I roll the dough between butter paper so that the dough does not stick. Do not use too much flour while rolling.
    • cutting shapes – I just lightly dip the cookie cutters into the dough, this helps to get clean shapes with no adhesive.
    • Punishment – I add the sprinkles right before baking so they stick better. For the icing, wait until the cookies have cooled completely.

    serving and storage

Serve these cookies as a snack or with a cup of tea or coffee. It also tastes good with evening tea. Store leftover cookies in an airtight container. They stay good for up to a week at room temperature. If the cookies have icing, keep them in a single layer so they don’t stick together.

    general questions and answers

1.Can I make this without eggs?

Yes, you can try the eggless version, but the texture will be slightly different. You may need some milk to knead the dough.

2.Why did my cookies spread too much?

Most of the dough was not cold enough. Chilling is important for cut-out cookies, so don’t skip this.

3.Can I make the dough ahead?

Yes, you can make it and keep it in the fridge for a day, just keep it wrapped so that it does not dry out.

4.Can I add cocoa or chocolate?

Yes, you can add some cocoa powder or choco chips. Adjust the dough slightly if necessary.

    5.Do these cookies stay crunchy?

Yes, once cooled and stored properly, they remain crunchy for several days. Just stay away from moisture.
