Whole wheat bread is a soft homemade bread made from whole wheat flour and baked until golden. This is one of those basic recipes that sounds simple but is very useful to have for breakfast or dinner on a daily basis. You can make this bread when you want to eat something healthy and fresh at home. Its taste is mild with a mild wheat flavor and goes with almost anything.

This bread is made entirely from wheat flour so it tastes much better than white bread. This keeps your stomach full for a long time and you do not feel heaviness. You can eat it on toast, sandwich or even plain. Baking roti at home may seem difficult at first but once you try it actually becomes very satisfying and easy.

    jump to:

    About whole wheat bread

Whole wheat bread is yeast-based bread made using wheat flour, water, oil, and a few basic ingredients. Yeast helps the dough to rise and makes the bread soft on the inside. This process may seem lengthy but once you try it, it is not difficult. Yeast helps the dough to rise and makes the bread airy and soft.

This recipe is not made with refined flour, its texture is a bit denser than refined flour bread but soft when cooked properly. This bread can be easily modified in many ways. You can also add seeds, oats, or nuts for added texture. Some people also add honey instead of sugar.

Whole wheat bread has a very mild flavor, with little nuttiness from the flour, with a natural sweetness if you add sugar. You can keep it plain for a delicious sandwich, or add a little more sugar to make a slightly sweeter bread that tastes great with butter and jam. You can also add honey or seeds like flax, sesame for extra crunch.

I usually cook this roti on weekends. It lasts good for a few days so it helps a lot during my busy mornings. Sometimes I make sandwiches using homemade bread and pack them for kids’ lunchboxes.

    Whole Wheat Bread Ingredients

    • whole wheat flour – I used only wheat flour. It gives a nutty taste to the bread and makes it healthy. You can add a little flour if you want a lighter texture, but I kept it 100% wheat.
    • cooking oil – I add it to keep bread soft and moist. It also helps the pieces dry faster.
    • instant yeast – I used instant yeast to help the dough rise properly. This gives a light texture inside the bread. You can also use active dry yeast but it needs to be activated properly.
    • Sugar – I have used sugar to activate the yeast and give a slight sweetness. It also helps brown the crust. If you want, you can use brown sugar.
    • Water – I have used hot water to knead the dough. This helps the yeast work better. I usually add little by little because the flour is absorbed differently.

    Why does this recipe work

    • This is a simple homemade bread recipe and not complicated.
    • This recipe makes soft rotis even without using flour.
    • You can easily adjust the size and shape of the roti.
    • It is healthy and better to eat daily.
    • This recipe works well for toast, sandwiches and plain bread.

    Expert Tips

    • yeast – I make sure the yeast is foamy before using. Do not skip the step otherwise the roti will not rise properly.
    • kneading – I knead the dough for 8 to 10 minutes until it is soft and smooth, this develops the gluten and makes the bread soft.
    • first rise – I have covered the dough and kept it in a warm place. Depending on the climate this may take 1 or 2 hours. The dough should double in size before shaping.
    • certification time – I keep the dough in a warm place to rise. Sometimes it takes longer depending on the weather so be patient.
    • cooling before cutting – I always let the bread cool completely before cutting it. Cutting too early will result in the inside becoming sticky and crumbly.

    serving and storage

Serve them hot with butter, jam or plain tea. It goes well with both sweet and salty spreads. You can toast it or use it for sandwiches. Leftover bread can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.

    general questions and answers

1.Is it made from wheat flour?

Yes, this recipe uses only wheat flour. When kneaded well, the texture will be slightly dense but still soft.

    2.Can I give up sugar?

Sugar helps activate the yeast. You can reduce it but try not to give it up completely.

3.Why did my bread become hard?

Most of the flour was hard or overcooked. Apart from this, too much flour can also cause this.

    4.Can I use butter?

Yes, you can use butter if you want, it adds more flavor.

5.How long does it stay fresh?

It remains fresh for about 2 days outside and 4-5 days in the refrigerator. Always cool completely before storing.
