Aloo Chaat is a delicious snack made using potatoes with spice powders and herbs, it is a quick dish that you can make when you suddenly feel like eating something different. Its taste is spicy, slightly sour and very comfortable to eat. I usually make this in the evening when everyone wants some snacks.

This chaat is usually made even during fasting days because potatoes keep your stomach full for a long time. There is no need to add chutney or deep fry it. A few ingredients from the kitchen are enough. It tastes good even when hot and mild. You can make this even when guests arrive suddenly.

    About Aloo Chaat

Aloo chaat is a popular Indian street style snack where potatoes are cooked until hard and then cooked well. The main thing is to get the texture of the potatoes right. If the potatoes are too soft, they will get mashed and the chaat will get spoiled. Firm potatoes hold the spice coating better. This step determines much of the final flavor.

The texture of this chaat is soft from inside and slightly crispy from outside. You can also lightly fry the potatoes to get good bite and taste. Spices and spices give flavor to that chaat. Lemon juice adds freshness and mild spicy taste to it. All together it gives a nice classic chaat feel.

This is a very flexible recipe. You can adjust the spice level easily. Some people add onions or green chillies to it, but I like to keep it simple. Even a slight change in spices gives a different taste every time. You can play with what you have. It takes hardly any time and requires very little effort.

I usually make this chaat fresh and serve it immediately. It does not require planning or prior preparation. This is one breakfast that gets finished very quickly once served. Everyone starts asking for more.

    Aloo Chaat Ingredients

    • Potato – I have used medium sized potatoes for this recipe. I cook them under pressure until they harden so that they are easy to cube. Overcooked potatoes will fall apart while frying, so try not to overcook.
    • spice powder – I use red chili powder for a little heat, not too much. Roasted cumin powder gives nice taste to the chaat. Mango powder adds spiciness and chaat masala gives that street style flavour. You can adjust all as per your preference.
    • Oil – I have used it for shallow frying potatoes. This helps in getting light golden color and better taste. You can use any cooking oil.
    • Lemon – I finally squeeze. I always remove the seeds before squeezing. It gives freshness to the chaat.
    • coriander leaves – I add for freshness and color. It also balances the flavor of the spices. If not available you can skip.

    Why does this recipe work

    • It is very easy and requires only basic ingredients.
    • The spices coat the potatoes well and give good taste.
    • Potatoes make this a filling and satisfying breakfast.
    • You can adjust the spice and sourness easily.
    • No sauce or complicated preparation required.

    Expert Tips

    • cooking potatoes – I cook them until they harden. If these become soft then the chaat will become soft. Try not to overcook.
    • roasting patiently – I usually fry potatoes on low flame. This helps them to get uniform color. Do not rush to fry on high flame.
    • mixing spices – I add the spice powder only after the potatoes cool down a bit. If added earlier, the spices may burn and taste bitter.
    • Lemon – I add lemon juice at the end after turning off the flame. This keeps the taste fresh and not bitter.
    • served – I prefer to serve this chaat immediately. Potatoes become soggy if kept for too long.

    serving and storage

Serve the aloo chaat warm or hot. You can serve it with hot tea in the evening or during weekend breakfast. This is a great idea for the beginning of a party or when guests arrive suddenly. This chaat tastes best when fresh. Avoid storing leftovers as the texture will change.
