About Chocolate Bark
Chocolate bark is nothing but melted chocolate that is set and then broken into pieces. It is easy to share it with friends and family during festive times as it is easy to make and looks colourful. The texture is smooth with a slight crack when you bite. The topping also gives a good crunch.
Layered Chocolate Bark is a great last-minute holiday gift you can make. A super easy 2 layer chocolate bark with dark chocolate, white chocolate and sprinklers, perfect for this holiday season!
The bottom layer is usually milk or dark compound chocolate which gives a deep cocoa flavor. The top layer is white chocolate which adds sweetness and creamy taste. Besides, it is well balanced and does not feel too heavy. The layers look attractive when broken into uneven pieces.
You can simply make changes to this recipe, instead of sprinklers you can add chopped nuts, rice crispies, dry fruits or even crushed candies. Some people swirl both chocolates together for a marble effect. It is very flexible and you can adjust the thickness as per your liking.
I usually make this when I need a last minute sweet for gifting. It sets up quickly and doesn’t create a big mess in the kitchen.

Layered Chocolate Bark Ingredients
- dark chocolate – I used it as a base layer for the rich chocolate flavor. It melts easily and hardens after cooling. If you like a slightly lighter taste then you can use milk chocolate.
- white chocolate – I used this to give a sweet and creamy contrast to the top layer, it also makes the bark look more shiny. If you want, you can use regular white chocolate instead.
- sprinkler – I added it for color and a little crispness on top, making the bark look more festive and fun. You can also add some chopped nuts or rice crispies for added texture while cutting.

How to Make Chocolate Bark Step by Step
1. First of all, heat water in a saucepan.

2. Cook on low flame, place a bowl inside. Make sure the bowl does not touch the water in the saucepan. Also check that there is not even a drop of water inside the bowl, it should be completely dry. Add cooking chocolate, I have used dark chocolate.

3. Leave it for 3 minutes, then start stirring it until the chocolate is completely melted. Cancel.

4.After this, boil water again in the same saucepan. Place another heat-resistant bowl on top of it. Add white cooking chocolate into it.

5. Leave it for 3 minutes, then start stirring it until the chocolate is completely melted. Cancel.

6.Now spread parchment paper on a tray and pour melted dark chocolate on it.

7. Spread it in a thin layer using a spatula.

8.We have used only 1 cup of chocolate so about ¼ inch thickness would be good for this measurement.

9. Keep in the refrigerator for 10 minutes.

10..Now pour melted white chocolate over the frozen dark chocolate. It will still be sticky but if it thickens, melt the chocolate again and add it. Can’t wait for the chocolate bark to be ready!

11.Similarly, spread it in a thin layer.

12.After this add sprinkler and silver balls in it. You can add any topping of your choice. Finally set in the fridge for 30 minutes.

13. Gently lift and remove the chocolate bark from the parchment paper.

14.After this, place it on a chopping board and chop it roughly. If you want, you can even break it.

Finally the chocolate bark is ready.

You can also make it single later and thus add nuts and dry fruits to the topping.

Expert Tips
- use dry bowl – I always make sure the bowl is completely dry before melting the chocolate, a drop of water can spoil the texture and cause the chocolate to stick.
- double boiler – I have melted the chocolate by placing the bowl over boiling water. Make sure the bowl does not touch the water otherwise the chocolate may overheat.
- spread evenly – You can use a spatula to spread the chocolate thinly and evenly. If the layer is too thick it will take longer to set and will not break easily.
- cool between layers – I usually let the first layer cool for a few minutes before adding the white chocolate. If the base is too soft the two layers may blend together a bit.
- add toppings – I always sprinkle the topping on when the chocolate is still soft. If you wait too long it won’t stick properly.
serving and storage
Serve the chocolate bark in small pieces on a plate for dessert or snack. You can pack it in small boxes or covers for gift giving during the holidays. If the weather is hot, keep it in the refrigerator in an airtight container. It stays good for a week if stored properly.
general questions and answers
1.Can I use dark chocolate?
Yes, if you like the strong taste of cocoa then you can use dark chocolate. Its taste will be a little less sweet but still very good.
2.Can I melt in the microwave?
Yes, you can melt in the microwave in short bursts. Keep stirring occasionally so that it does not burn from below.
3.Why did my chocolate become thick and grainy?
This usually happens when water gets in or it overheats. Make sure the bowl is dry and the flame is on low.
4.Can I skip the white chocolate layer?
Yes, you can make single layer bark. Simply spread one type of chocolate and add toppings on top.
5.Can I store it at room temperature?
If the weather is cold then you can keep it at room temperature for some time. In hot weather it is better to keep it in the refrigerator so that it does not become soft.
