    About Mashed Potatoes

Mashed potatoes are made by boiling potatoes, cooking them until soft and mashing them while still hot, then adding hot butter and milk to a smooth texture. This dish is common in many places and is prepared slightly differently in every home.

Some like its smoothness and some like its slightly rougher texture. This version is soft, creamy and easy to mix and is suitable to eat with vegetables. I usually make this on weekends when I don’t want to cook something complicated.

If you are looking for a mashed potatoes recipe that is buttery, smooth and creamy then this is perfect for you. My recipes are simple, quick and easy to make with minimal ingredients that are easily available in your pantry.

Butter and garlic give the main flavor to mashed potatoes. The garlic adds a mild aroma and the crushed black pepper adds a very mild spice. It is not spicy but not bland either. The taste is balanced and goes well with many foods. You can keep it simple or change it up a bit depending on the meal.

Mashed potatoes are much liked because of their texture. It should be fluffy and soft, not sticky or watery. Hot milk helps in getting good texture and makes it creamy. You can keep it smooth or a little thick as per your choice but do not over mix the mixture. This is an easy recipe and it does not take much time.

    Expert Tips

    • Potato – You can use Yukon potatoes or russet potatoes or regular floury potatoes which are available in the markets.
    • boil – I cut the potatoes into equal sized pieces. This helps them cook evenly and mash easily.
    • damp -Allow excess moisture to evaporate. Keeping it on low flame removes excess moisture.
    • mash – I always mash the potatoes while they are hot. Cold potatoes become lumpy and difficult to mash.
    • hot milk – I heat the milk before adding it to the mixture, cold milk can affect the texture.
    • avoid over mixing – I just mix until it comes together. Adding too much makes the mashed potatoes sticky.

    serving and storage

Serve them hot with gravy, roasted vegetables, bread or any curry. It goes well with simple meals and festive dishes too. You can also add extra butter on top while serving. Store leftover mashed potatoes in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Before serving, add some milk and heat it on low flame.

    general questions and answers

    1.Can I skip garlic?

Yes, you can skip the garlic if you want plain mashed potatoes. The taste will still be good but I would prefer to add garlic for that flavor.

2.Can I make mashed potatoes in advance?

Yes, you can make it a day before and store it in the refrigerator. Add milk and heat again, stir to make it creamy before serving.

3.Why does my mashed potatoes become sticky?

This is usually caused by over mixing. Mash them gently and do not use a mixer or any electronic gadget. A hand masher is sufficient or you can also use a flat ladle.

    4.Can I use cream?

Yes, you can use cream for better taste. You can also take ¼ cup milk and ¼ cup cream.

    5.Can I freeze mashed potatoes?

Let the potatoes cool, cover tightly with a ziplock, and freeze for up to 5 months. When you want to use thaw overnight in the refrigerator, pour into a saucepan, add the milk and heat it slowly.
