Blueberry Scones are truly one of my all-time favorite recipes, and with good reason! There’s something undeniably comforting and totally delicious about biting into a warm, slightly crunchy scone filled with sweet, juicy blueberries. It is a simple pleasure, but brings a lot of joy. People love blueberry scones for their perfect balance of crunchy texture and tender interior, a testament to the magic that happens when flour, butter and those vibrant little berries come together. However, what makes these blueberry scones truly special is the aroma that fills your kitchen as they bake – a warm, inviting scent that promises pure, unadulterated joy. They are the ideal companion for a morning cup of coffee or a relaxing afternoon tea, a little piece of heaven that you can create yourself.

    Blueberry Scones

There’s something incredibly comforting about a warm, tender scone, especially when it’s filled with sweet, juicy blueberries. These Blueberry Scones are my favorite recipe when I want a delicious treat perfect for breakfast, brunch or an afternoon pick-me-up with a cup of tea. These are surprisingly simple to make, requiring only a few basic pantry staples and some fresh blueberries. The result is a scone that is lightly sweet, incredibly moist, and has just the right amount of crunch. Let’s cook!

    Material:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1/2 cup thick cream
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1-2 tbsp milk
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • Instruction:

Prepare dry ingredients and cut in butter

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 2 cups flour, 1/3 cup granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. These dry ingredients will form the base of our scones, providing structure and leavening. Now, it’s time to cut in the cold butter. Add 1/2 cup cold, cubed unsalted butter to the dry ingredients. You can use a pastry blender, two forks, or your fingers to cut the butter into the flour mixture. The goal is to create a thick, crumbly texture with a few pea-sized pieces of butter. These little pieces of butter will melt in the oven, creating those desirable flaky layers we love in scones. Make sure the butter remains cold, as this is the key to getting a gentle extract. If your kitchen is warm, you may want to put the flour and butter mixture back in the refrigerator for a few minutes if it starts to feel warm.

Mix the wet ingredients and gradually add the dry ingredients.

In a separate small bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup heavy cream, 1 large egg, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. This is where our moisture and prosperity comes from. The heavy cream provides fat and contributes to the tender texture, while the egg acts as a binder and adds a bit of color and richness. Vanilla extract enhances the overall flavor. Now pour this wet mixture into the bowl with dry ingredients. Using a fork or spatula, mix gently until the ingredients are completely mixed. Be careful not to over mix! Over-mixing causes gluten to develop in the flour, which can result in a tough crust. We want to mix just enough so that there are no dry streaks of flour left. The dough will be shaggy and slightly sticky at this stage.

Fold in the blueberries and form the dough

Gently stir in 1 cup fresh blueberries. Be gentle with the blueberries to avoid crushing them too much, as this can leach their juice and spoil the color of the dough. Once the blueberries are evenly distributed, turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead your hands lightly with flour also. Gently mix the dough together and form it into a homogeneous ball. You can flatten it out a little with your hands or with a rolling pin to about 3/4-inch thickness. Then, using a knife or bench scraper, cut the dough into 6 to 8 pieces, like a pizza. Alternatively, you can use a round biscuit cutter to make individual scones. If the dough seems too sticky to handle, you can sprinkle a little more flour on your hands and work surface.

Bake the scones until golden perfection

Carefully transfer the cut scones to the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between them. You can brush the tops of the scones with a little extra cream or egg wash for a beautiful golden-brown finish, although this is completely optional. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the scones have risen and the tops are a beautiful golden brown. The exact baking times will depend on your oven, so keep an eye on them. You can check for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center of the scone; If it comes out clean, they’re ready. The aroma that will fill your kitchen during this step is absolutely divine!

    Prepare the Glaze and Drizzle

While the scones are baking or cooling slightly, prepare the glaze. In a small bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup powdered sugar, 1 to 2 tablespoons milk, and 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract. Start with 1 tablespoon of milk and add more milk, a tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired drizzling consistency. You want a glaze that is thick enough to cover the scones but thin enough to drizzle easily. Once the scones have cooled on the baking sheet for a few minutes and are no longer hot, transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely. Once the scones have completely cooled, drizzle the prepared glaze generously over the top. You can use a spoon or piping bag for a more controlled drizzle. Let the glaze set for a few minutes before serving. These blueberry scones are best enjoyed fresh and still slightly warm, but they are delicious at room temperature too. They store well in an airtight container for a day or two, although they’re really at their peak the day they’re made. Enjoy every delicious bite!

    conclusion:

I hope you enjoyed learning how to make these deliciously delicious blueberry scones! This recipe is really a winner because it strikes the perfect balance between tender, crunchy texture and sweet, juicy blueberries. These are surprisingly simple to make, making them a perfect dish for weekend breakfast, afternoon tea or even a special breakfast. The aroma that fills your kitchen when they cook is heavenly, and the taste is even better. Don’t be afraid to try these; I promise you won’t be disappointed!

These blueberry scones are incredibly versatile. Serve them warm with a dollop of clotted cream and a drizzle of your favorite jam for a classic pairing. They are also delicious with a simple glaze made of powdered sugar and a splash of milk or lemon juice. For a touch of fun, consider sprinkling coarse sugar on top before baking for a delightful crunch.

If you’re feeling adventurous, consider adding a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the dry ingredients for an extra layer of heat, or perhaps add a little lemon juice to complement the blueberries. You could also replace some of the blueberries with raspberries or add some finely chopped dark chocolate for a different flavor. the possibilities are endless!

    Frequently Asked Questions:

Can I use frozen blueberries instead of fresh?

Absolutely! Frozen blueberries work wonders in this blueberry scone recipe. You don’t even need to melt them completely. Just sprinkle a tablespoon of flour mixture on them before adding them to the dough so that they don’t bleed too much color. They will release their delicious juices as they cook, creating the distinctive blue streaks.

How can I make my scones extra tender?

The key to soft scones is to avoid overmixing the dough. Once the wet and dry ingredients are combined, stop mixing. Overworking the dough will cause the gluten to develop, resulting in tough balls. Also, make sure your butter is very cold and cut into small pieces; This creates pockets of steam during baking which contributes to a light and tender texture.
