About Wheat Porridge
Wheat porridge is a traditional baby food that has been prepared in many homes for a long time. Earlier it was prepared by soaking wheat and extracting milk from it. That whole process takes a lot of time and effort. In this version wheat porridge mix is used which helps in making the same porridge quickly without much effort.
Dalia mixture is made from wheat flour, almonds, moong dal and fried gram dal. All these ingredients are roasted and made into powder, which makes them easy to digest. When cooked with water it turns into a soft and smooth porridge. Jaggery syrup is added for light sweetness which is a better alternative than sugar.
It has a soft and creamy texture. It should neither be too thick nor too thin. When cooked properly, it sticks well to the spoon and is also light on the stomach. Its flavor is mild and not too spicy, making it suitable for children who are slowly trying new foods. This is one of those baby foods that I feel comfortable giving often.
I usually prepare this porridge mix once and store it. This helps a lot later and makes feeding time much easier. I prepare a small amount of fresh food each time forage.

wheat porridge ingredients
- wheat flour – I’ve used it as the main base for oatmeal mix. I usually take good quality wheat flour as it gives better texture.
- Almond – I have included almonds mainly for nutrition and a little richness. It gives a mild nutty taste to the porridge. If your child is new to eating nuts, you can reduce or skip it.
- Bean lentil – I used to make it more filling and healthy. It is light and easy to digest for children. You can use split yellow moong dal.
- fried gram dal – I added it for thickness and smooth body. If not available you can skip.
- jaggery syrup – I have added it for sweetness. It tastes good without being overpowering.
