About Thinai Ladoo
Thinai Laddu also known as Foxtail Millet Laddu, is a traditional sweet made using foxtail millet flour. Bajra is first cleaned, roasted and then finely ground to prepare flour. After this, mix honey and ghee in the dough to bind it and make small round shaped laddus. It is also a good sweet to keep at home during times of hunger.
It has the soft but grainy texture of millet flour. Also, roasting millet gives good aroma and taste. Honey adds mild sweetness while ghee adds richness and helps bind the mixture together. It does not require many ingredients and once the dough is ready, laddus can be made easily.
It is considered healthier than many other sweets. Thinai millet contains fiber and nutrients which makes it good for regular diet. Many people also like millet sweets for a light sweet breakfast.
You can try this simple sweet as an alternative to regular sweets. I usually make these thinai laddus when I want a quick, healthy home-made sweet. This is a must try recipe.
My neighbor and a good friend of mine told me that they make this Thinaiyam Thenam and give it to girls when they come into puberty because it is very nutritious. As far as I know this Thinaiyam Thenam is a very old recipe, but don’t underestimate it like I did because it is very tasty.
I have given the recipe from the beginning, but if you are short of time, you can also try it with ready-made foxtail millet flour.

Thinai Laddu Ingredients
- Thinai/Foxtail Millet – I used Thinai millet. It gives a nutty flavor and slightly grainy texture.
- Honey – I added honey for mild sweetness. It also helps to bind the dough together while shaping the laddu.
- Ghee – It adds aroma and richness to the laddu. This adds shine and helps the mixture come together while rolling.
- cardamom powder – I added it for sweet aroma. It balances the sweetness and although not traditionally added, it tastes good.
