About Cucumber Khichdi
Cucumber Khichdi is a Kerala-style raita made using cucumber, curd, coconut, herbs and spices. This dish is commonly known as Pachadi, but towards South Kerala it is called Khichdi. But in Kerala there is a difference or variation between Pachadi and Khichdi.
This cucumber khichdi is a part of the Onam sadya or Kerala sadya menu. It is rich, creamy and delicious which can be paired with meals or eaten as is. The coconut in the ground paste is the highlight of this recipe. Try and enjoy!

Vellarikka Khichdi Ingredients
- Cucumber – Choose fresh juicy cucumbers. You can choose small or large variety as per preference and availability.
- Curd – Choose thick curd or such curd which is not sour. Beat it well and use it.
- coconut paste – Paste is made using coconut, cumin and green chillies.
- tempering – A simple tadka is made and added using coconut oil, mustard seeds, curry leaves, red chillies.
- coconut oil- Coconut oil adds great flavor to the pachadi. However you can also use regular cooking oil.

How to make Vellarikka Khichdi step by step
1.Wash the cucumber, peel it and remove the seeds. Cut them into bite-sized cubes.

2. Grind coconut, cumin and green chillies with some water and make a coarse paste. Cancel.

3. Add coarse paste to cucumber and mix well. Fry until the raw smell comes out. Switch off. Add salt and beat curd.

4. Add curd to the cucumber mixture and stir. Fry the items in coconut oil and add them to the masala pachadi. Adjust salt if necessary.

Serve chilled with any variety of rice.

- Do not add too much water while cooking the cucumber as it may turn mushy.
- Alternatively you can grate cucumber and use it in khichdi.
- Adjust green chillies as per your spice level.

- 1 Big Cucumber
- 1 cup thick curd
- salt to taste
To grind into coarse mixture:
- 1 Green chilly
- ¼ cup grated coconut
- ¼ small spoon Cumin
To get angry:
- 2 small spoon coconut oil
- one and a half small spoon mustard seeds
- 2 red chilli
- 1 small twig Curry leaf
