About Masala Fish Fry
Masala fish fry is made by first marinating the fish with spices, herbs and then frying it. This is one of the most delicious fish fries and definitely a unique twist on regular fries. This masala fish fry is aromatic, flavourful and delicious.
This fish fry can be made using pomfret fish, seared fish etc. My family likes its combination with rasam rice best. Fish fry is one of the popular orders in restaurants especially in non-veg hotels.

Masala Fish Fry Ingredients
- fish – I have used pomfret fish, you can use any fish of your choice.
- Marinade – Marinate the fish with curd, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, salt and coriander powder
- Masala Paste – A special spice paste is made using coriander seeds, fennel seeds, black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, shallots, garlic
How to make Masala Fish Fry step by step
1. Grind the ingredients listed under ‘To grind’ to a coarse paste without adding water (the onion will release the water on its own anyway). Clean the fish, wash well and keep aside. In a mixing bowl, add turmeric, chilli, coriander powder, curd and salt as required along with the fish and grind the spices.

2. Marinate for at least 1 hour, keep aside. Heat the dosa pan and add the fish pieces, sprinkle oil and fry until golden brown. You can also deep fry the fish pieces.

Serve with freshly cut lemon slices and onion rings. It tastes best with hot boiled rice.

Expert Tips
- Use an iron pan or non-stick pan to toast the fish as it contains seasoning which sticks to the pan. Otherwise you can also deep fry them.
- It is a little spicy so reduce the chilli powder as per your spice level.
- If you don’t like more spice flavor then omit the cinnamon and cloves.
- I have used Wawal (pomfret) fish variety. You can also use vanjaram fish.
serving and storage
Fish fry tastes great with raw onion and a slice of lemon. You can marinate fish pieces and freeze them for about a month. Melt it, then fry it and serve it hot!
